Introduction of Tinker Hatfield
The Air Jordan III was the first pair of Air Jordans designed by Tinker Hatfield. The Air Jordan III’s were also the first Air Jordans to show the air sole at the heel of the shoe. The Air Jordan 3 was a lightweight shoe with a lot of durability that featured an elephant trim and tumble leather for a look of luxury. Tinker Hatfield would go on to create all other Air Jordan model up till the Air Jordan XV (15).
Introduction of The Jumpman Logo
The traditional “Wings” logo, which had been used for the Air Jordan I and Air Jordan II was replaced by the Jumpman symbol. The Jumpman logo would remain the logo for all other Air Jordans that followed the Air Jordan III.
Introduction of Mars Blackmon
Along with the arrival of the Air Jordan III came the arrival of Mars Blackmon. The very funny Mars Blackmon, created and played by Spike Lee, was featured on many Nike television and poster ads promoting the Air Jordans. The ads were known as the “Mars and Mike” ads and were one of Nike’s most successful ad campaigns. These ads created the famous question: “Is it the shoe?”

Michael Jordan has said that the Air Jordan III’s are one of his all-time favorite shoes. Michael has worn the Air Jordan III’s on many great occasions throughout his amazing career. In 2005, viewers of ESPN agreed with Michael by voting the Air Jordan III as the greatest sneakers of all-time. The Air Jordan III is often voted as the best sneaker of all-time on many polls.
