Michael Jordan’s First Championship
The Air Jordan VI (6) was released in February 1991. The Air Jordan VI was worn during Michael Jordan’s first NBA title after seven years in the league. His Chicago Bulls defeated the L.A. Lakers 4-1 in a best of 7 series. Along with his first NBA championship with the Chicago Bulls, Michael also collects his fifth scoring title, his second league MVP award, another All-Star selection as well as the Finals MVP award.
The Air Jordan VI’s Rubber Tongue
The Air Jordan VI was once again designed by Tinker Hatfield. The unique feature of the VI’s was the 2-sided rubber tongue that made it easier to get the sneakers on your feet. The rubber tongue of the Air Jordan VI was designed with two holes on the top of the tongue and a loop on the back of the sneaker, often called its spoiler.
Improved Rubber Soles
The clear rubber soles and the lace locks originally created for the Air Jordan V (5) was re-used for the Air Jordan VI. There were various complaints with the original rubber soles used on the Air Jordan V. With the Air Jordan VI, Tinker Hatfield attempted to fix these issues. A more solid rubber was used so that the sole would be less slippery. The sole of the Air Jordan VI also did not turn yellow like those of the Air Jordan V.
Reinforced Toes
The Air Jordan VI was the forced Air Jordan to have reinforcement around the toes. This was a first in the industry and a direct request by Michael Jordan. When the original Air Jordan VI was released to the general public in 1991, five color variations were available.Air Jordan VI In The Media
