Air Jordan XVI – Not Designed By Tinker Hatfield

The Air Jordan XVI was released on February 17, 2001. The release date was chosen to coincide with Michael Jordans 38th birthday. Following the success of the Air Jordan XV, Nike and Jordan Brand knew that they would continue to release Air Jordan Sneakers. The Air Jordan XI was also the first Air Jordan sneaker that was not designed by Tinker Hatfield in over a decade. Even though it was not designed by Tinker Hatfield, many Air Jordan fans felt that it had all the essence of a Tinker Hatfield design. The XVI was designed by Nike’s Senior Footwear Designer, Wilson Smith.

A Return to The Essence

The Air Jordan XVI featured many of the most beloved features of past Air Jordans. This included The Air Jordan III‘s mid-cut upper, the Air Jordan V‘s mesh and the Air Jordan XI‘s patent leather. The clear rubber sole from the V, VI and XI was also incorporated into the design of the XVI. Along with these features, a blow-molded heel and Zoom forefoot Air, a lightweight mesh upper and full-length inner bootie.

Street Shoe to Game Shoe

The Air Jordan XVI’s unique feature was it’s removable gaiter that transformed the sneaker from a street shoe into a game shoe. The gaiter covered the sneaker to protect it while playing outdoors but it could also be removed for playing indoors. Removing the gaiter also gave the Air Jordan XVI a brand new look. Although it was a great idea in terms of style, the gaiter would often fall off when playing basketball.

Minor flaws and issues

The Air Jordan XVI had minor flaws with it’s design. Just like with the Air Jordan XI, the patent leather would crease and crack. Many basketball players also claimed that the shoe was quite stiff. Even with these minor issues, the Air Jordan XVI still remained a great lightweight sneaker with the added charm of past Air Jordans. Four color variations were released in 2001, and many Player Exclusives were issued.
